With the holiday season approaching faster than we can fathom, you may be considering switching things up this Christmas. If that’s the case, we have the perfect destination for you to spend the holidays abroad—Mazatlán.

The Mexican coastal resort town known as “La Perla del Pacifico” is in Sinaloa and boasts as much fun as it does culture. Sandy beaches, one of the world’s largest malecónes, have a bustling cultural life, and delicious foods are among the many things to enjoy. Modern Muze visited Mazatlán in October and experience the magic for ourselves. We’ve curated a list of the best places to stay, eat, and visit as you plan an unforgettable vacation to the Land of the Deer.
Places to Stay in Mazatlán:
Finding a wonderful place to stay can make or break your visit. But don’t worry. We have several recommendations featuring delicious food, excellent views, and relaxation. First up is the Dreams Estrella del Mar Mazatlán Golf & Spa Resort. The hotel opened in April 2024 and is a family-friendly, luxury, all-inclusive resort located in the exclusive Estrella del Mar community in Mazatlán, Mexico.

The resort offers ocean-facing suites, including swim-out options, with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. With several packages, guests can enjoy Unlimited-Luxury® amenities, including a stocked mini-bar, 24-hour room service, and top-shelf spirits. Dining options include four à la carte restaurants, a grill, an international buffet, and five bars, with no reservations required. Even more, Dreams has a waterpark with a lazy river, multiple pools, tennis, pickleball, and paddle courts, and a world-class golf course. Plus, their molecular mixology class is a MUST.

Another great place to consider is the El Cid resorts, which boast four all-inclusive hotels for the whole family. Our favorites include El Cid Marina and Hotel Playa El Cid Castilla. Both offer suites, rooms, and delicious restaurants for everyone. El Cid Castilla, situated right on the Zona Dorada of Mazatlán, is close to wonderful beaches and incredible nightlife.
What to Do:
Whether you love nature, hanging out at the beach, or enjoying a bustling nightlife, Mazatlán has it all. Starting with the Gran Acuario Mazatlán Mar de Cortés, Mexico’s largest and the most important one in Latin America, the aquarium focuses on educating, restoring, rescuing, and investigating marine animals. A great place for families, the aquarium boasts several activities, including an interactive activity with penguins, feeding rays and love birds, and even snorkeling with sharks in the great tank.

Another beautiful place to visit is the Parque Turístico Observatorio 1873. Go back in time from the top of the Cerro del Vigía to witness one of Mazatlán’s most stunning views. The observatory overlooks the entire town and features a delicious restaurant and bar, a bird sanctuary, and a museum with artifacts dating back to the 1800s. Even more, you can connect with your inner muza at the Raíces “Centro de Reunión Ancestral,” where you can experience a connection with your ancestors through various ceremonies.
Finally, a visit to the observatory can’t end without a visit to the Museo Nacional de la Ballena, “MUNBA.” This incredible museum educates visitors about the importance of whales and their conservation in our oceans. Immersive experiences, interactive learning, and a deep dive into Mazatlán’s connections with whales will make you think twice about the effects of these beautiful animals.

If you’re more of a nature and beach lover, then take an expedition to Deer Island, where you can enjoy the Pacific while also learning about the wildlife of this area of Mexico.
Bars and Food in Mazatlán:
Known for its delicious seafood dishes, such as aguachile, ceviche, pescado zarandeado, and tacos al gobernador, Mazatlán’s culinary scene is unique. From seaside kiosks to restaurants that will leave you wanting more, there’s a lot to taste.

Among our recommendations is El Presidio. Located in a historic setting, it has a charming bar and outdoor seating that transports you to another era. The chef has transformed his abuelas’ recipes for all to enjoy. The blue crab tostadas, aguachile, and esquites with tuetano were to die for.

For a chill night out, Cerveceria Tres Islas is a brewery you don’t want to miss out on. Pair a flight of beers with their fried calamari. Of course, there’s so much more to see and taste in Mazatlán, so head over to their city center and stop at streetside kiosks for snacks, drinks, and the ultimate micheladas. One last place on our list is La Clamacheria. This casual spot has clamatos, ceviches, and micheladas that are to die for. Grab your pick and enjoy it while walking around the malecón, watching a baseball game, or while taking a tour around the city.
