I'm from a whole list of places! My parents came to the US from the Philippines, but we are Chinese and Portuguese. I was born in Chicago, grew up in Indiana, went to Nashville for college, spent 12 years in New York followed by 2 in LA, and since the pandemic I've moved to Chicago with my partner who is based here -- full circle!

What has been your career path to where you are today?
SAMANTHA LIM
My path has been really non-traditional. I moved to New York with an envelope of cash and printed MapQuest directions to an apartment I found on Craigslist. I scored a fashion assistant job at a luxury company I knew nothing about, and worked for a CEO who made The Devil Wears Prada look like preschool. I got fired at least 5 times, once for letting the petal of an orchid wilt. I had long hours and so I started a fashion blog on the side, and eventually got fired for blogging a story about running into the Olsen twins gossiping about Anna Wintour at a very chic fashion week party. My blog got seen by a media guy in my neighborhood and he hired me to be the Editor in Chief of his fashion websites. I figured out how to do that job by stalking every resource I could and doing what I do best - talking relentlessly about everything I observed. We eventually sold the websites to NYLON Media and then I incorporated myself and became what we now call a multi-hyphenate (at the time this didn't exist and people thought I was insane for having multiple jobs). I was an editor/writer, stylist, producer, event planner, and social media strategist and got to work with so many amazing people -- including Madonna, the Kardashians, you name it. After one year, I was working for 13 clients and it was literally 24/7 of pure insanity.
I eventually went in house again and ran a branded content studio at StyleCaster (saw the beauty of advertising budgets!) and then went full steam ahead to do even bigger branded projects at Milk Studios. While there, we launched Milk Makeup, which was an insane crash course in the power of community in beauty and one day I got a call from queen: Pat McGrath. I joined as her VP of Social and Creative Content and was on the rocketship that led to a billion dollar acquisition, it was absolute luxurious chaos.
When I started to get the itch for sunshine, work-life balance, and mental health, I moved to LA to start my beauty incubator HipDot. We set up a cruelty free, vegan, clean color cosmetics line that has done a slew of influencer brand collaborations. After designing over 50 products and launching 3 brands, I realized that I love creative ideation and development more than I do the day to day operations of running and growing a business. I felt really burnt out, which was the whole point of leaving New York, so I knew it was time to take a longer breather and follow my gut again (always follow your gut - it never lies!). I hadn't taken 3 months off in the 13 years I'd been in the industry, but people in LA make a very good case for the leisurely lifestyle. I just didn't know it was going to turn into a pandemic! But entrepreneurism is in your blood, and it wasn't too long before I started figuring out the next thing. My business partner and I have a joke that our personal hobby is "business".

We are now a year into COVID and you had a career shift during this time. Tell us about Dream Learn Do More.

I actually took an exit from my last company in January and meant to just take a few months off (I moved to LA to build a beauty incubator for influencer brands) but then Covid happened and that little vacation turned into a global pandemic. A few months in, at its darkest point, my good friend (and now new business partner) and I wanted to start a new business that reflected our new outlook on work: something remote so we could be covid safe and flexible, independently funded so we don't have to listen to anyone but ourselves, and making things that gave back to the world or simply put joy in it - particularly around the Election, BLM, and COVID. With those tenets in mind we created Dream Learn Do More, an e-commerce company that creates online businesses that give back. Our first site is an activist apparel site that takes a cheeky stance on political topics. We were a smash right off the bat with our timing around the election, and the way we built our company - made to order so no inventory waste, direct shipping from the manufacturer so low carbon footprint and no nightmares for us setting up a factory, and a give back program to raise money for charity - felt like a dream company. We are both seasoned entrepreneurs, but e-commerce was a totally new world - we literally learned how to do every single step by watching YouTube videos and researching online. Now, we totally love it and our plan is to continue to build e-commerce businesses in other verticals, all from the safety of our laptops!

So many times women second guess ourselves and don't take the risk to start something new. How did you overcome any fears of starting this business or anything in the past too.
I had a few key moments with mega-watt celebrities or insanely successful people who treated me like a human, and needed my knowledge to help them. These small moments over time made me realize that everyone is just a person, and you can do absolutely anything you want.

What advice would you give your younger self?
SAMANTHA LIM
Do more of the most. Every mistake or problem disappears with time, no one remembers anything you did in your 20s once you're in your 30s, so just shoot your shot! I wish I would have caused more of a ruckus or been a bit more daring instead of thinking "this will be so embarassing" or "what if i fail, what will people think". Failure is a part of life and has made up all the best life stories!

You've built quite a following on social media. What would be your best tips and practices for the gram, tiktok etc.
SAMANTHA LIM
Ah, the impossible question! This is seriously our generations version of "where is the fountain of youth?" Every platform has its own purpose and way to win -- the biggest piece of advice I can give is to do what is the most comfortable to you -- if you're a selfie taker, take selfies; if you're a writer, write long captions; if you're a comedian, give me unfiltered access -- this is what is going to feel most authentic, regardless of the platform. And the best advice to grow is to just commit to showing up. The most growth I've had comes in waves -- I'll be stuck inside in winter or working a lot and will show up 5x a day on social media. People get used to seeing you and they want to follow.

What qualities do you admire most in yourself? In others?
SAMANTHA LIM
I value my ability to think creatively and make connections to things that typically do not connect. I think it's the one human skill that a computer has yet to take over, and it's the foundation of original thinking. I really admire when people are good listeners and can keep a conversation moving. The art of conversing is a masterful skill that I'm working on, so when I meet people who can always just keep it flowing in a room of strangers I am so blown away.

When you wake up in the morning, what do you look forward to the most?
SAMANTHA LIM
Making a smoothie and reading the newspaper, first thing. Smoothies are a great way to get all the potions and powders into your body that otherwise feel tedious, plus I can overdose on blueberries which I love! And we subscribed to the WSJ hard paper this year, it's been such a wonderful way to read the headlines, it's informative and feels quite nostalgic, win win!

When you’re having a hard day, or you meet a challenge, what are your practices to overcome it?
SAMANTHA LIM
I will set a timer for 3 minutes and say "literally anything can wait 3 minutes" (its the amount of time you could get stuck at an elevator or red light or take a bathroom break) and do absolutely nothing until that timer goes off. It's guilt free, brain cleansing, deep breathing time where I can calm my body and mind down and get back to the task at hand.
