Three Creative Tech Tools to Help Kids Discover their Latino Heritage

As a parent, finding content appropriate for your kids and honors your heritage can be hard. Now, finding content that everyone also likes is an even higher order to fulfill. While streaming platforms and YouTube boast tons of content, parents can’t always take a “set it and forget it” approach. Thankfully, new tech tools can help parents find enriching content.

Here are some of our favorites.

Canticos

Created by author, storyteller, and artist, Susie Jaramillo, the Canticos app is a bilingual preschool brand that makes learning two languages fun and exciting. The mompreneur felt that the United States was missing the richness of Latino storytelling that honored and celebrated her culture.

The platform hosts a plethora of books, apps, games, and animated videos. They are all based on beloved Latino nursery rhymes we all grew up with. Also, the app has been recognized by the CYNOPSIS Imagination Awards, kidscreen, KIRKUS STAR, and Common Sense.

Kindle

This nifty tool in your arsenal can open up a world to help your kids reconnect with their roots. With your Kindle in hand, you’ll be able to read together, practice Spanish, and even host a virtual book club with relatives who may live far away. The Kindle makes it easy to access Latino literature from authors from across Latin America.

Encantos

Co-founded by Steven Wolfe Pereira and Jaramillo, Encantos has created stories that want children to see the magic of what is possible for them and who they can be. Encantos offers culturally relevant books and animations that the entire family will love — all streamable from an electronic device. Much of the content created by Encantos can be found on the Canticos app as well.
