For many, homework is seen as a necessary part of school to help reinforce the day’s lessons. But what happens when your child suddenly gets hours of homework, leaving them little time to do anything else?
The homework debate has been going on for decades and has stirred up sentiments in favor and against it. One mom from Arizona had enough and advocated against her son’s homework plan.
The TikToker felt that her child had been given too much work for their age
The lifestyle influencer, @cayleyxox is a mom-of-three who took to social media to speak out on what she felt was a hefty packet for her kindergarten-aged child. In her first of three videos, she states how she recently learned that parents can opt out of homework for their kids.

The Arizona mom details how her son’s packet was “about 15 to 20 pages front and back.” She stated that she sent an email to her child’s teacher explaining that they would be opting out of homework for the year. Particularly because of the anxiety and stress the packet was causing her child.
The mom added he struggled to get through the pages. Additionally, he would have little time to do anything else during the week.
The mom-of-three follows up by saying that she and the teacher compromised
In her second video, Cayley shared how she chatted with her son’s teacher one day at the pick-up line. During the chat, the teacher framed her concern as a “complaint.” The mom notes that she corrected the teacher. She also explained she was illustrating how the amount of homework her son received wasn’t something that would work for her family.

The teacher pushed back, citing state exams were a big motivator for homework. In the end, Cayley and the teacher agreed to a weekly reading log.
In her third video, the Arizona mom reminds others to advocate for their kids. Particularly because her son’s new homework plan was reduced. She demonstrates a newsletter sent out to all parents in her son’s grade detailing what skills the kids needed to have mastered within a determined timeframe — all skills Cayley’s son had learned before starting kindergarten.
