Auili’i Carvalho, the stunning voice behind Disney’s “Moana” is using her talents once again to empower the people of Maui.
The Hawaiian native joined SPAM in a delicious and altruistic initiative. Through the collaboration, she’s supporting the restoration efforts in Maui while sharing one of the island’s most cherished snacks: SPAM Musubi.
In an exclusive interview with Modern Muze, Cravalho shared her favorite items from the SPAM limited-edition merchandise collection, memories of growing up eating SPAM Musubi, and what’s next in her career. Hint Hint: “Moana 2.”
Honoring the tragic Lahaina fires through the SPAM Musubi campaign
August 8 is National Musubi Day, which coincides with the first anniversary of the Lahaina fires in Maui. As part of SPAM’s ongoing efforts to support the people of Maui, they launched a collection that includes a SPAM Musubi Ottoman, crew neck, lounge pants, nori blanket, t-shirt, scrunchies, and more. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to the Aloha United Way to aid the restoration of Maui.
“I love the give back effort, I love that spam is truly an island favorite, and I really respect that the brand,” she told Modern Muze. “Knowing their audience, knowing the love that the islands have for it, has also chipped in to give back on the one-year anniversary of the fires. If you buy all the spam merch, then 100% of the proceeds go to Aloha United Way.”
Some of the actress’ favorite items from the collection include the SPAM Musubi earrings, nori blanket, and duffle bag.
“They’re almost, almost too cute not to eat,” she adds. “I mean, we still eat them, but they’re, they’re pretty darn cute.”
Cravalho has been a fan of SPAM Musubi since she was a child. With Hawaiian, Puerto Rican, Portuguese, Chinese and Irish ancestry, her family migrated to Hawaii for to work the sugarcane plantations. Still, she’s been living the Aloha way her whole life.
“I remember my mom making very lazy man Spam Musubi, which includes a Tupperware container, a layer of rice, some furikake and spam, and that’s it. There’s no lovingly wrapped in nori either, like it’s not cut in half, really pretty, so that you can take a nice bite. Now she gave me a spoon and a fork, and she was like, go to school.”
But it’s not all SPAM for Auli’i Cravalho, the actress is coming back with ‘Moana 2’ and other projects
Cravalho continues showing off her incredible talent with upcoming movies and even a Broadway appearance. For one, she’s coming back with “Moana 2,” so Disney friends rejoice.
“This story takes place three years from when we see Moana. She is the first Disney princess who has aged, we see her age in the second film, which feels really important to me,” she says. “She’s growing up. We also see her adding new people into her story and into her journey, which I think is also another important aspect of finding community and letting them help you in times of need.”
Adding, “I’m very grateful to be making my Broadway debut with ‘Cabaret.’ I’ll be in New York City for a six-month run starting in September, which I’m thrilled for. It scares me, but I know that I’m heading in the right direction,” she says. “I’m going towards something that makes me nervous. Also, I’m continuing in the restoration efforts of corals. I work with Kuleana Coral Reefs. I’ve been very grateful, very blessed for what projects that I’ve been able to work on and also producing for the live-action Moana.”
