Latinos made history at the Emmys again!
Actress Liza Colón-Zayas is officially the first Latina to win the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her performance in The Bear.
“Thank you to my husband David Zayas, he told me to write a speech and I didn’t because I didn’t think it would be possible,” Colón-Zayas said in her acceptance speech. “How, how could I have thought it would be possible to be in the presence of Meryl Streep and Carol Burnett and Janelle [James] and Sheryl Lee Ralph and Hannah [Einbinder]. I love you all from the bottom of my heart, and all the women — my mommy — mami, thank you.”
The playwright of Puerto Rican descent won for her role as Tina in the FX comedy series. This was her first nomination and win. Adding, “Thank you for giving me new life with this show. To all the Latinas who are looking at me, keep believing and vote. Vote for your rights!”

Although she expressed disbelief upon receiving the award, she spoke The Hollywood Reporter at the Emmy Perfomer Nominee Celebration The Bear‘s prospects of making history at the 2024 Emmys were “epic.”
“The women who are in the same category with me, I love and admire them so much so either way I win to be considered their peers,” she said regarding her nomination. “And then if it happens, it’s epic for women and people who look like me. I’ve done something.”
And as predicted, the show DID win big. Scoring 11 awards this year in comparison to 10 in 2023. Among the wins, Jeremy Allen White took home the award for Best Actor in a Comedy Series and Ebon Moss-Bachrach for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy, both winning two consecutive years. Additionally, the show’s creator, Christopher Storer won for Best Directing in a comedy.
