5 Analog Activities To Stop Doomscrolling This Holiday Break

Are you over staring at your screen all day? Now that a new year is around the corner, it’s the right time to plan out how to level up. And if that includes stopping doomscrolling and picking up more analog activities, you’ve come to the right place to spark that side of creativity.

It’s so easy to spend hours on social media after you’ve wrapped up your workday. All of a sudden, you look at your clock, only to realize an hour has passed. Where did the time go? Now, it’s bedtime and your day is over – time to set the alarm for tomorrow’s workday again. Isn’t there more to life? If you’ve been thinking about this, you’re not alone. In fact, many social media users are stepping back from social media and enjoying analog activities to fill up their day.

First off, what’s an analog activity (also known as analog wellness)? An analog activity is a digital-free activity. For example, it could be listening to vinyl records, solving a puzzle, knitting, scrapbooking, handwriting letters, etc. It’s a moment to ditch digital screens and focus on physical media.

If you’re interested in diving deeper into analog activities, here are five ways to get into analog wellness and create new digital-free hobbies. The best part? You can do these activities with your loved ones.

Vinyl Records

One of my favorite pastimes is listening to music. But instead of having an AI-generated DJ choose what you should listen to next, why not put on your personal vinyl favorites and enjoy a sonic masterpiece from start to finish?

@carolinesvinyls One of my current favorites and The best gift for any occasion! Birthdays, Christmas, Weddings or just because... Logic Puzzles, Crossword Puzzles & Word Searches

You’ll be surprised by how many different types of puzzles exist nowadays. Furthermore, there are different types of themed puzzles that fit any type of personality out there. For example, check out this holiday-themed murder mystery puzzle!

@a.tiny.spark Candlelit wordsearch 🕯️ Not sure if the eye strain was worth it, but it did feel romantic 🙂‍↕️ Cats are on my mind rn, can you tell #wordsearch #book #candlelight #romantic #romanticizeyourlife #cozy #cozyvibes #aesthetic #puzzlesolving #wordgames ♬ Idea 15 - Gibran Alcocer
Knitting

Knitting a scarf or beanie is one of the most thoughtful gifts that you can make for someone. The best part? It makes for a fun analog activity to keep you from doomscrolling.

@sleeeepy_cat I’m excited to share my first knitting project that I successfully finished ✨ 🧶 What I used: • circular needle 6mm 50cm • approx. 60 grams of yarn —————— 1. Cast on an even number of stitches (I did 54) + 1 stitch to join in the round. 2. Knit in brioche until you reach 23-25 cm (depending on how many times you want to fold the beanie). 3. Here you can add an accent color, I started with pink about 15 cm before the top. 4. When you reach 35-40 cm in total, you can begin shaping the top. 5. To finish the top knit two penultimate rows in regular 1x1 ribbing. 6. For the last row knit two stitches together each time. Then pull the yarn through the remaining stitches and tighten. 7. Don’t forget to block your beanie! Voila ✨ #knitting #knittok #knitbeanie #knittingbeginner #knittingtutorial ♬ Parapluie Rouge - pomodorosa
Handwritten letters

When was the last time you received or wrote a handwritten letter? Exactly. Instead of a birthday text, what if you wrote out a birthday card next time? I’m sure your loved one will be thrilled about the heartfelt gesture.

Scrapbooking

Sometimes memories get lost due to the iCloud malfunctioning or your apps crashing. That’s why it’s important to have physical media to preserve your life’s best memories. Cue in: Scrapbooking, a creative way to express yourself in paper. Believe me: one day you’re going to want to look back on your life in photos — and sometimes, you won’t have the right charger.

What is your favorite offline activity?

Being the Family Peacekeeper (And Why It’s Not Your Job)

The holiday season brings up a lot of emotions. Sometimes it even brings up unexpected roles to play to keep the peace during intense scenarios. For example, have you ever heard of the Peacekeeper role? Or have you ever had to be the Peacekeeper?

Let’s start with the basics. The Peacekeeper role is what you imagine it to be. It’s the person who is a mediator or the people pleaser. It is who smoothes tension, who manages emotions, and avoids conflict. Furthermore, it is described as people who “prioritize harmony over their own authenticity, which may have been necessary growing up in their family of origin.”

If this role sounds draining to you, it’s because it is. The Peacekeeper role comes with a toll. You may start feeling like your own needs aren’t as important as others, you may experience chronic pain, and even worse, resentment.

If you think this is your role, let’s dig in to uncover what the family’s Peacekeeper is and what they (or you) can do instead.

How It Plays Out During Holidays

There are many types of scenarios that may trigger the Peacekeeper role.

Some specific scenarios may include mediating between divorced parents. Are they going to get along or cause a scene? Or perhaps it’s changing the subject when politics come up. How about we talk about something else? Sometimes it plays out in situations where you apologize for other people’s behaviors. Sorry about their drinking, they’ve had a week. And sometimes it plays out by absorbing everyone’s stress so that they can relax. But at what cost? Your authenticity.

There are a lot of emotional layers that a Peacemaker experiences—especially in the holidays. It’s exhausting, invisible labor when emotional regulation isn’t your job. As a Latina, it could even derive from a cultural belief of “calladita te ves más bonita” which is, quite frankly, outdated. It’s even more difficult as a woman of color because of the invisible labor and expectations at the cost of your ease (but we’ll get to that another day).

What to Do Instead

Let’s get this clear: it’s not your responsibility to manage other people’s emotions. And no, you can’t predict people’s actions.

Instead, let’s focus on what you could do to ease your role. Here are specific scripts to get you through the holidays, should the aforementioned scenarios happen to you.

  1. Speak the truth: “Things are getting heated. Let’s change the subject.”
  2. Or don’t say anything at all. Embrace silence (no, you don’t have to fix everything).
  3. Leaving the room when needed.

At the end of the day, understand that your friends and family are adults. They can handle their own feelings and actions. If needed, take breaks, have an exit strategy, and limit your time at holiday events.

Bottom line is: it’s OK to give yourself permission to breathe. Everyone else’s peace can’t come at your expense. The real peace is boundaries and not managing everyone’s emotions.

If you’re the Peacemaker of the family, we leave you with something to think about: “Who would you be if you weren’t responsible for everyone’s feelings?”

Dear Reader: This Holiday Season, You’re Allowed to Skip the Parts That Exhaust You

Somewhere between noting down all of my friend and family gatherings on my calendar and getting texts from people who want to hang out this season, I realized I was performing joy instead of feeling it. How is it already this busy and not even the middle of December yet? Why is my calendar already full without rest days?

It seems like every holiday season gets busier. We are finally getting a work break, only to realize that our calendar is still packed with happy hours, coffee dates, and dinners with people who are in town for the holidays or simply want to catch up now that they have time. And sure, we’re full of gratitude and love, but also, where do we draw the line? When can we curl up and read a book instead?

And more importantly, how do we set the boundary without feeling guilty about it?

Why We Feel Trapped

The holiday unspoken rule is that you must do everything. Make sure you continue every tradition, accept every invite—and do it with a smile. You have to get your Christmas tree ASAP, and decorate your home before the first week of December is over. And God forbid you don’t have your Christmas tree up by the end of the first week of December.

If this rings a bell, you’re not alone. Sometimes it feels like guilt is our default setting because we’ve been taught that skipping traditions equals being a bad daughter/sister/mother. But that’s an outdated thought.

It’s time to release traditions and prioritize what actually makes us happy.

The Permission You’ve Been Waiting For

Say it with me and speak it to existence: You’re allowed to skip traditions that drain you. Take the following scenarios as examples.

The party you dread going to every year.

Sure, your cousin spends time getting the family together every year. But if the gathering is more draining than loving, why go in the first place? Try this instead: Check in with your favorite family members with a phone or video call. It’s better to be present in a one-on-one call than dissociated during a group conversation.

The 12-hour family gathering.

Why does our family—especially Latino families—expect you to be at their place for a minimum of two meals each gathering? If you stay for only a couple of hours, you might as well have missed the whole day in your mother’s eyes. If this timed expectation drains you, be vocal about it and move on. Try this instead: Say how long you’ll be at the family gathering, and leave when the indicated hour strikes. And no, you don’t have to explain yourself.

The “homemade everything” expectation.

This is for the chefs out there. This is your sign to skip making everything from scratch. Cooking or baking from scratch—plus the cleaning that comes with it—is draining. Try this instead: prioritize what you’re making homemade, and buy the other dishes. Don’t let the holiday expectations get to you this year. You’re one person.

How to Actually Do It

Repeat after me: “This year, I’m keeping it simple.” But this time, stick true to it. Create boundaries without explanations, and realize that your presence matters more than your performance. And if someone gets mad… so what? Life goes on. We’re all adults here.

With this in mind, what’s one tradition you’re releasing this year?

How to Keep Your Mind and Body in Sync This Season

It’s that time of the year when things seem to get busy. All of a sudden, you’re caught in between traveling, gatherings, stress, eating more sweets, and subsequently getting less sleep. Oof! Sometimes it can feel like too much on your plate, but we’re here to say that you’re not alone—and we’re here to help.

The holiday season brings us joy with special get-togethers and even some unaccounted-for expenses. But before getting too overwhelmed with the overstimulation of having to be too social, or having to spend money on each family member, we’re here to give you tips on how to take care of what’s most important: you. It’s important now more than ever to take time from your busy schedule to pay attention to yourself in this season that’s meant to be a relaxing and reflective one.

From getting sunshine to practicing gratitude, here’s how to keep your mind and body in sync this season. Because let’s be real: it’s all about balance, energy, and protecting your peace before burnout hits. And we are not starting a new year feeling tired, are we?

Morning Light, Even When It’s Dim

You might think this is silly, but feeling the morning sunlight is life-changing. Five to ten minutes of sunlight or movement can make a significant difference, especially to counter shorter days.

Tip: Instead of scrolling as soon as you wake up, go straight to the window or to your porch to enjoy your morning.

Find Your Seasonal “Yes” and “No”

Wellness isn’t about doing everything—it’s about boundaries. If there’s a specific thing you do not want to do, simply express it. It may sound like a daunting task, but make a list and prioritize. Cross off those seasonal tasks that are not worth your time this year.

Tip: Make a “yes/no” list (Yes: family dinners, cozy nights. No: overcommitting, guilt gifts).

Ritualize Rest

Rest is important. And listen: it’s not something to feel guilty of. Want to take it up a notch? Turn downtime into a mini-ritual: light a candle, have tea before bed, or have a nightly stretch routine.

Tip: Make rest feel intentional, not indulgent.

Nourish, Don’t Neglect

Sometimes you have to rewire the way you think of things that sound like a chore. Swap the “holiday cleanse” narrative for nourishment by thinking of adding rather than subtracting.

Tip: Add something (hydration, greens, protein) instead of restricting.

Digital Detox Moments

Create micro digital breaks to calm the nervous system—even 10 minutes of no scrolling can make that difference.

Tip: Replace one scroll session with music or reading.

Practice Gratitude That Feels Real

How do you personally practice gratitude? Gratitude may look different to you than others—and that’s OK. Skip forced journaling; try one mindful moment daily (like noticing light or warmth). Or think of gratitude. Or speak your gratitude. That’s all it takes.

Tip: Gratitude doesn’t need a list, just awareness.

With this in mind, we invite you to start with one ritual from this month and continue through January. Remember: “You can’t pour from an empty cup — but you can refill it quietly, one small ritual at a time.”

5 of Our Favorite Dua Lipa Covers

Dua Lipa is giving it all during her Radical Optimism Tour. Throughout her ongoing tour, the English-Albanian singer, songwriter, and actress has been covering a popular song in each city, expressing gratitude to her loyal fan base. Here’s why that’s important.

It takes a lot of work to do what Dua is doing. Besides performing an impeccable setlist that includes hits like “Levitating,” “Maria,” and “Houdini,” she’s also connecting with her fans on a deeper level. To make her concerts extra special—and unique to the night’s attending audience—she’s also covering popular songs that are impactful in the city’s culture. Imagine attending Dua’s concert and her singing your city’s favorite romantic song? Well, it’s totally possible. She did that last night (December 1), singing Luis Miguel’s “Bésame Mucho” in Mexico City, Mexico. And that’s only day one of three. We are excited to see what she has in store for the rest of the tour.

From Dua Lipa’s cover of Kylie Minogue’s “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” to Luis Miguel’s “Bésame Mucho,” here are our top five covers thus far!

How Heather Hemmens’ Galifonia Undies Is Elevating Period-Focused Underwear

Period underwear is finally being elevated. For those who need extra support, Costa Rican-American actress and entrepreneur Heather Hemmens is leading the way with her new innovative proposal: Galifornia Undies.

Launching on Thanksgiving, Galifornia Undies is a line of fashionable period underwear for those who struggle with heavy flows. It’s described as “a soft, stylish, and empowering line of period-focused panties designed to help women feel beautiful and confident during their cycle.” Made with PFAS-free cotton lining and with Oeko Tex certified fabrics, the underwear company is spearheading lingerie that is both comfortable and safe to wear. And honestly, what better way to experience your period without the fear of spotting?

To get a better insight into her new underwear line, Modern Muze talked to Hemmens about the inspiration behind Galifornia Undies, what makes her underwear different, and what she hopes her audience gets from her new brand.

P.S. Beyond launching Galifornia Undies, you can also see the Afro-Latina star as “Lily-Anne” in Hallmark’s new Christmas film, The Snow Must Go On. It is set to be released on November 28!

How do your Afro-Latina roots influence Galifornia Undies?

I was diagnosed with fibroids, which is very common among black women. It caused heavy periods that inspired me to design a line of period underwear to help make our lives easier and more fashionable during these times!

How long have you been working on Galifornia Undies products? When was it officially formed?

I had the idea for Galifornia Undies about a year and a half ago. I got to work on it right away!

What was the moment you knew you needed to be part of the period-focused panties’ evolution?

I was on set filming a Hallmark movie in a big white wedding dress. I was on my period, and it was so heavy that I had to keep disappearing into the bathroom every 30 minutes to prevent staining the white dress. It was in that moment that I knew I wanted something better for these situations for myself and other women.

What takes Galifornia Undies different from other brands?

Our period undies are cute! That is the most obvious thing that sets them apart, but they also all have PFAS-free cotton lining and are made with Oeko Tex certified fabrics, which make them not only more flattering, but also a safer option!

What challenges as a Latina entrepreneur have you faced?

Financing is always a challenge, and I didn’t feel it was the right time to raise funds, so I am the sole investor in my brand.

What advice do you have for other entrepreneurs as a Latina in the lingerie industry?

Find something that enhances your life, and it will do the same for others!

Tell us about your goal with Galifornia Undies and what you hope the audience gets from the brand.

I want women to have a better period, which I believe leads to a better life. Period.

Zulay’s Edit: How To Set the Mood for Thanksgiving

Can you believe Thanksgiving is already this week? For those celebrating, we hope you enjoy your time off with loved ones and delicious food!  But beyond food, we want to highlight the dinner table setting, which is one of our CEO Zulay Henao’s favorite parts of the holidays.

To get into the Thanksgiving spirit, here are Henao’s exclusive tips on how she prepares her Thanksgiving table setting. From perfecting small details such as the table’s seasonal florals and candlelight setting, to curating the overall mood and being intentional about each aspect, here are 10 tips to make your next dinner party one for the books.

Tip #1: Start with seasonal florals.

Terracotta, olive, cream, rust tones; mix high-low arrangements with greenery for movement.

Tip #2: Add a touch of whimsy.

Incorporate edible flowers throughout the spread — on platters, cocktails, and place settings.

Tip #3: Let candlelight lead.

Layer slender tapers, low votives, and soft, warm lighting to create an intimate, cinematic glow.

Tip #4: Bring out the best china.

Holidays deserve your most beautiful pieces; keep the rest of the décor minimal to let them shine.

Tip #5: Create a self-serve banquet.

Move the food to a sideboard; vary levels using stands and risers; label dishes for an editorial touch.

Tip #6: Design a wine and cocktail station.

Use glass decanters, a signature seasonal cocktail, and a garnish tray with herbs and edible blooms.

Tip #7: Curate the mood.

Dim overhead lights, play soft Latin jazz or modern chill, and let the atmosphere feel warm, welcoming, and chic.

Tip #8: Invite connection.

Encourage guests to move freely, serve themselves, mingle, and share something they’re grateful for.

Tip #9: Make room for magic.

The goal isn’t perfection — it’s creating a moment that feels intentional, elevated, and full of heart.

Tip #10: Add a personal touch.

Henao always adds some Latin flair. This year, it will be empanadas and coquito to take it up a notch.

What are you planning for your loved ones?

Who Is Mexico’s Fátima Bosch, the New Miss Universe?

This is just in — Mexico’s Fátima Bosch won this year’s Miss Universe! The Mexican beauty queen received her new crown at the Impact Challenger Hall in Bangkok, Thailand, after the three-week competition.

“Today I confirmed once again that what God has destined for you cannot be stopped by envy, aborted by fate, or changed by luck. Long live Christ the King,” Bosch wrote in Spanish on her social media.

Bosch was crowned by last year’s winner Denmark’s Victoria Kjær Theilvig. Miss Universe 2025’s runner-ups were Thailand’s Praveenar Singh, followed by Venezuela’s Stephany Abasali, Philippines’ Ahtisa Manalo, and Ivory Coast’s Olivia Yacé, per CNN

What else do we know about Fátima Bosch?

You might remember her name from the major controversy during the Miss Universe pageant when contestants walked out after an organizer’s remarks. After the commotion, Bosch continued her pathway to compete in the popular pageant.

But she’s more than a scandal. Originally from Teapa, Tabasco, 25-year-old studied fashion design at the Ibero-American University in Mexico City, Mexico, and at the Nuova Accademia delle Belle Arti (NABA) in Milan, Italy. She also studied at the Lyndon Institute in the U.S., according to the BBC. It’s known that one of her main professional goals is to create sustainable designs and work with recycled materials. With this new win, we’re excited to see where she takes her fashion vision and how she’ll represent Mexico while at it.

“To all those Latina girls who are inspired by my story tonight, I would say to always believe in yourselves, in the beauty of your soul, your voice, and what you are capable of achieving. Never let anyone make you doubt your worth,” she wrote on her social media in Spanish after receiving the prestigious crown. “If a dream has touched your heart, it’s because you have the ability to achieve it. The road won’t be easy, there will be obstacles, but if you work hard, you will get there. I send you all my love and good vibes.”

Meet the Indigenous Women Transforming Fashion and Representation

Fashion has long borrowed from Indigenous cultures, but this Native American Heritage Month, we are honoring the women who are reclaiming the narrative.

Meet the designers — Jamie Okuma, Bethany Yellowtail, and Lesley Hampton — blending legacy with modern design, matriarchal power with bold expression, tradition with unapologetic trendsetting. From beadwork to runways, from storytelling to silhouettes, these creators are reminding the world: heritage isn’t a trend. It’s the original thread.

From Okuma’s stunning hand-beaded statement pieces to Hampton’s Indigenous-influenced fashionable runway looks, here are three outstanding designers who are leaving their culture’s mark in the fashion industry.

Jamie Okuma

Okuma, a member of the Luiseño and Shoshone-Bannock, is known for hand-beaded statement pieces, custom shoes, and high-end ready-to-wear that blend contemporary fashion with Indigenous symbolism. Her pieces have appeared in major museums, proving fashion can be fine art. At the same time, Okuma’s work honors heritage through craftsmanship and unapologetic excellence, giving couture artistry meets Native luxury.

In September, she became the first Native American designer to showcase her designs on the main CFDA New York Fashion Week calendar. How’s that for making history?

Bethany Yellowtail

Yellowtail, a member of the Crow & Northern Cheyenne Nation, is all about expressing activism as fashion. Through her brand B.Yellowtail and the B.Yellowtail Collective, she centers Indigenous identity and community. Her designs honor matriarchal power and storytelling — with each collection connecting back to women who lead and protect.

An example of this is on a recent post, where she praised the Apsaalooke Nation Lady Warriors for wearing her fabric and scarves, calling them “such powerful women.”

Lesley Hampton

Hampton, a member of the Anishinaabe and Temagami First Nation, is all about inclusivity and empowerment. She’s a leader in representation – and you can tell by her runway looks that merge Indigenous influences with modern all-body silhouettes. To date, her pieces have appeared at Toronto Fashion Week and on red carpets — proof that Indigenous women belong everywhere fashion is made.

Overall, Hampton redefines beauty as strength, identity, and inclusion. And we’re absolutely here for it!
