For decades, Zoe Saldaña has delivered some of Hollywood’s strongest performances. From Avatar to Guardians of the Galaxy, the Dominican-American actress has graced the screen several times, and can now boast the title of Golden Globe winner. On January 5, Saldaña made history at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards by winning Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Emilia Pérez.
Despite her incredible track record, this was Saldaña’s first time receiving this kind of recognition. Breaking out into tears when called to the stage, she delivered an emotional speech after hugging her mother and fellow actors.
Zoe Saldaña celebrated her first-ever Golden Globe Win
“This is a first time for me,” she said taking the microphone. “I’m filled with adrenaline, but my heart is full of gratitude. Thank you so much to the Golden Globes for celebrating our film and the women of Emilia Pérez.”
Saldaña continued by praising the film’s director and writer, Jacques Audiard, the cast, and crew of the film. “Our experience was kind of magic on the set of Emilia Pérez and it’s all thanks to you. Thank you so much for trusting me to play Rita, you are just a character that I admire so much, you created rich and complex characters,” she told Audiard.
The Avatar star went over her wrap-up time to honor her family and children as well. “My family, my mom is here, my sisters, my husband and my sons I love you, I love you—you guys are everything,” she shared.
Emilia Pérez took home four awards out of ten nominations
In Emilia Pérez, Saldaña plays the role of Rita Mora Castro, a lawyer jaded with her job who receives an offer from cartel leader “Manitas.” After negotiations, she helps him fake his death and start living life as their true self.
In addition to Saldaña’s win, Emilia Pérez leads this year’s Golden Globe nominations with ten recognitions and several wins, including Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, Best Original Song, and Best Motion Picture (Non-English).
