Bichotas al Poder: Karol G Makes History With First-Ever Grammy Win

A historic moment for Bichotas worldwide took place at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday. Colombian superstar Karol G stood poised, her cobalt hair shimmering under the stage lights as she took home her first-ever Grammy for Best Música Urbana Album for her acclaimed 2023 LP “Mañana Será Bonito.”

The auditorium erupted in a cheer as Maluma and Christina Aguilera presented the Bichota with the award. Ascending to the stage with a radiant smile, she proceeded to inspire with her acceptance speech.

“Hello everybody, my name is Karol G,” she began, her voice trembling slightly with emotion. “I am from Medellín, Colombia. This is my first time at the Grammys, and this is my first time holding my own Grammy.”

“I’m super happy, I’m super nervous, I’m super excited to be in front of so many legends that I admire and respect,” she added. “This is such a beautiful thing. My album has given me the best memories in my whole life — my fans that came and enjoyed my album, that gave motivation and inspiration and heal with me — thank you so much,” she continued. “I promise to give you my best always. And I hope that this is the first of so many. So thank you, everybody.”

Karol G made history as the first woman to receive an award under the “Best Música Urbana Album” category

Continuing her speech by thanking Tainy and Rauw Alejandro, her fellow nominees, Karol G walked off stage as a trailblazer once more. The category, which was introduced in 2022, had only one winner in the last two years: Bad Bunny.

El Conejo Malo took the award two years in a row for “El Último Tour del Mundo” and “Un Verano Sin Ti.” However, Karol G won for the same category at the Latin Grammys in 2023. She also won Album of the Year for “Mañana Será Bonito” at that ceremony.

Aside from her incredible craftsmanship, La Bichota transcended her musical style in this album with chart-topping hits such as “TQG” with Shakira, “Mientras Me Curo del Cora” and “Provenza.”

On Instagram, the Medellin native continued sharing this new dream come true.

“It prides me to know that this album has positively impacted the lives of so many….it became a movement of wanting to better myself, of living, of enjoying even the dark moments and valuing what you have while what you want arrives,” she wrote. “It’s a bandaid for the soul and the greatest gift that it leaves me is knowing that it connected with so many people worldwide accompanying you with my music and that these songs represent a special moment in their lives.”

She ended with “WE WON A FUC***G ANGLO GRAMMY FOR URBAN LATIN ALBUM OF THE YEAR!!!!!”

Peso Pluma, Gaby Moreno and Natalia Lafourcade also won big at the awards

While Karol G’s award was the only Latino award presented at the televised event, other Latino artists also won big. Peso Pluma, received an award for the best música mexicana album for “Genesis.” Guatemalan artist Gaby Moreno performed alongside El David Aguilar while winning the best Latin pop album for “X Mí (Vol.1).”

Additionally, Mexican-American singer Natalia Lafourcade’s “De Todas Las Flores” also won best Latin rock or alternative album in a tie with Juanes.

“Thank you, my God. Thank you, music,” she said in a mix of English and Spanish. “Music is my boss and she has taught me that … we have to take care of our inner garden. This album has healed me so much.” Ending with, “Mom, Dad, Mexico, let’s go!”
