Bichotas al Poder: Karol G Makes History With First-Ever Grammy Win

Karol G Grammys

A historic moment for Bichotas worldwide took place at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday. Colombian superstar Karol G stood poised, her cobalt hair shimmering under the stage lights as she took home her first-ever Grammy for Best Música Urbana Album for her acclaimed 2023 LP “Mañana Será Bonito.”

The auditorium erupted in a cheer as Maluma and Christina Aguilera presented the Bichota with the award. Ascending to the stage with a radiant smile, she proceeded to inspire with her acceptance speech.

“Hello everybody, my name is Karol G,” she began, her voice trembling slightly with emotion. “I am from Medellín, Colombia. This is my first time at the Grammys, and this is my first time holding my own Grammy.”

“I’m super happy, I’m super nervous, I’m super excited to be in front of so many legends that I admire and respect,” she added. “This is such a beautiful thing. My album has given me the best memories in my whole life — my fans that came and enjoyed my album, that gave motivation and inspiration and heal with me — thank you so much,” she continued. “I promise to give you my best always. And I hope that this is the first of so many. So thank you, everybody.”

Karol G made history as the first woman to receive an award under the “Best Música Urbana Album” category

Continuing her speech by thanking Tainy and Rauw Alejandro, her fellow nominees, Karol G walked off stage as a trailblazer once more. The category, which was introduced in 2022, had only one winner in the last two years: Bad Bunny.

El Conejo Malo took the award two years in a row for “El Último Tour del Mundo” and “Un Verano Sin Ti.” However, Karol G won for the same category at the Latin Grammys in 2023. She also won Album of the Year for “Mañana Será Bonito” at that ceremony.

Aside from her incredible craftsmanship, La Bichota transcended her musical style in this album with chart-topping hits such as “TQG” with Shakira, “Mientras Me Curo del Cora” and “Provenza.”

On Instagram, the Medellin native continued sharing this new dream come true.

“It prides me to know that this album has positively impacted the lives of so many….it became a movement of wanting to better myself, of living, of enjoying even the dark moments and valuing what you have while what you want arrives,” she wrote. “It’s a bandaid for the soul and the greatest gift that it leaves me is knowing that it connected with so many people worldwide accompanying you with my music and that these songs represent a special moment in their lives.”

She ended with “WE WON A FUC***G ANGLO GRAMMY FOR URBAN LATIN ALBUM OF THE YEAR!!!!!”

Peso Pluma, Gaby Moreno and Natalia Lafourcade also won big at the awards

While Karol G’s award was the only Latino award presented at the televised event, other Latino artists also won big. Peso Pluma, received an award for the best música mexicana album for “Genesis.” Guatemalan artist Gaby Moreno performed alongside El David Aguilar while winning the best Latin pop album for “X Mí (Vol.1).”

Additionally, Mexican-American singer Natalia Lafourcade’s “De Todas Las Flores” also won best Latin rock or alternative album in a tie with Juanes.

“Thank you, my God. Thank you, music,” she said in a mix of English and Spanish. “Music is my boss and she has taught me that … we have to take care of our inner garden. This album has healed me so much.” Ending with, “Mom, Dad, Mexico, let’s go!”

Congrats to the Latino gang!

Heather Hemmens X Modern Muze

Our next Muze is one of our very own, her Costa Rican roots are to thank for her exotic beauty and natural magnetism.

From Pura Vida to pure talent, perseverance and unwavering faith in self, it is our honor to bring you a deeper look into her world, her thoughts and her life.

Heather Hemmens is an actor, director, sister, friend and the ultimate MODERN MUZE!

MODERN MUZE
We are all coming out of a very traumatic year, how have you coped and dealt with all the change?
HEATHER
The most important thing for me was keeping my spirits up. I spent as much time as I could at the beach and in nature, in the sunshine. I picked up a few new hobbies and created schedules for myself so that I could feel productive. If I watched TV it was only stand-up comedy. No heavy shows or news cycles, just laughs! We have to protect our psyche during times like this, so that was my main focus.

MODERN MUZE
What did you learn about yourself during this time of uncertainty?
HEATHER
I learned that I’m not immune to loneliness! I usually have no problem with FOMO and can be a homebody, but my need for my village, my sisterhood, my family and loved ones really grew the past year. It’s ok to be vulnerable and need someone to lean on, and I treasure my close relationships even more now.

MODERN MUZE
How did you adjust personally and professionally during this time?
HEATHER
I was very fortunate to go back to work filming very early in the pandemic. This gave me so much more motivation to keep it together during the tough times because I had a light at the end of the tunnel. I am immensely grateful to be an entertainer and provide an escape for others while also saving myself through my art.
MODERN MUZE
You recently directed an episode of the show you also star in, Roswell New Mexico, congratulations, tell us more about your journey behind the camera!
HEATHER
I was thrilled to finally be behind the camera on Roswell, and I’m happy to say I’ll be directing another episode this season! I first started directing short films about 11 years ago, and I spent a long time shadowing other directors on set. I completed the DGA Episodic Director’s program and was finally eligible to do my first episode of television. It is a proud, hard fought dream come true for me.

MODERN MUZE

Now that you made the crossover into directing what kind of stories do you yearn to tell?

HEATHER

I’ve just signed on to direct my first feature film, I can’t say too much about it yet, but it is a diverse, inspiring, adventure story that I can’t wait to reveal!

MODERN MUZE

We learned that you’ve made a big difference in a young woman’s life via a youth empowerment organization called Big Brothers and Big Sisters LA. Tell us about how you are involved and that that is important to you.

HEATHER

I’ve been a Big Sister to my mentee, Denisse, for 6 years! I was so fortunate to have a mentor when I was a teenager and the impact she had on the trajectory of my life was immeasurable. I wanted to pay it forward and it has been one of the most rewarding relationships in my life. I have watched Denisse grow from a middle-schooler to a freshman in college! She is a smart, strong young woman and I’m so very proud of her.

MODERN MUZE

What are you looking forward to getting back to the most once this pandemic is over?

HEATHER

I neeeeeed to travel. I’m going to take the most epic, tropical vacation of my dreams. And also I want to go salsa dancing.

MODERN MUZE
A lot of what this platform is about is listening to the stories of our Muzes and how they have gotten to where they are today. Who and what has made you the person that you are in this moment? Anything you’ve had to overcome and learn along the way?
HEATHER

I’d like to mention my mentor again, because I think the result of women supporting women is what really changes the world. When women are empowered with knowledge, resources, education, they spread that wealth and nourishment back into their communities. On a personal level, one of the most important lessons I’ve learned is to not become distracted by what society expects of you, because that standard will always be too low!

MODERN MUZE
Favorite quote or go-to saying?

HEATHER

I’m the queen of “It is what it is”. This quote reminds me to have acceptance rather than resistance to the plan of the Universe.

MODERN MUZE
Who are some of your Modern Muzes?
HEATHER
You! My girlfriends! My sister, my mother, all the women in my life are resilient beyond belief.

MODERN MUZE

What characteristic to you admire most in other women?

HEATHER

I think any woman who can recognize other people’s baggage without trying to change it is wise and in control of her environment.

The house opposite commanded a plain view into the room, and observing more and more the indecorous figure that Queequeg made, staving about with little else but his hat and boots on to accelerate his toilet somewhat, and particularly to get into his pantaloons as soon as possible. He complied, and then proceeded to wash himself. He then donned his waistcoat, and taking up a piece of hard soap on the wash-stand center table, dipped it into water and commenced lathering his face. Say Goodbye to Summer With This Refreshing Flecha Azul Paloma Recipe

Refreshing, tangy, and bubbly, these are just a few of the words we would use to describe a paloma.

Although many are familiar with another iconic Mexican drink — the margarita — we’ve been on a paloma kick this summer that’s going well into fall. Perhaps it’s the laid-back simplicity this drink brings, with just a few ingredients (unless you want to get really fancy), or that it’s pink (Hi Barbie!), that makes it such a great choice.

Also, it turns out the paloma is actually a favorite around Mexico as well, with writer David Wondrich deeming it the “National Drink of Mexico.”  So, if you’re looking for a great recipe to share, sip alone or dazzle guests with, this is it.

This Flecha Azul Paloma Recipe is easy and comes with a twist

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz Flecha Azul Blanco Tequila
  • 1 oz fresh grapefruit juice
  • ½ oz fresh lime juice
  • ½ oz cane syrup

Directions:

Step 1: Pour all ingredients into a shaker with ice and shake until well blended.

Step 2: Top off with soda.

Enjoy!
